Portrait Critique

Everyone in this class this semester did such a great job, so I just chose a blog at random and picked Andrew's portfolio.  All of his shots fit the requirements for each assignment while still having originality and artistic interpretation evident in each photo.  My favorite photo was his portrait, it is so clear and spot on with lighting and composition and I love that he implemented family as his focus.  With all of his pictures I could see growth and quality continue to improve over the course of the semester, the last few are professional quality in my amateur opinion, well done Andrew.

Feature News

Rachel Harmon is above all a competitor, accomplished athlete and well respected individual in the sport of golf.  But she is also a wife to Curtis, a mother to Lily and Boston and also my college golf coach.  I first met Rachel Harmon during my sophomore year of college when she recruited me to be a part of the brand new Dixie State Women's Golf team.  She was all business with a hint of a playful and fun loving side that would occasionally surface; as I go to know her better through the years, that hint turned out to be a huge part of her personality and way of life.  She could outplay any of us, except when she was pregnant with Boston, and even then she kept up with us right into month 9 due to her fierce determination to compete and to win.

Coach Harmon has a great sense of humor, loves to prank people, thrives on competition and knows pretty much all of the words to all of the old school hip-hop songs as well as anything on the radio, making car rides as a team quite entertaining.  She acts like us college girls except when she needs to be mature but she is great at being able to integrate herself in with us as players because she too was a college athlete.  She still gets mistaken as a player instead of being our coach.  She knows what it is like to balance school and academics.  She knows the amount of time and effort goes into being a student-athlete and she respects us for making the decision and commitment to strive after excellence in both areas.

Rachel has done incredible things in the short time she has been in charge of the women's golf program; she has been a good coach, a great example of a player to strive after and someone who helped make my goal and dream to play collegiate athletics possible.  She has juggled having kids and working another job with being our coach because she loves the game, pure and simple.  We are her children as she will call us sometimes, and we have grown into a tight-knit team due to the people involved with it.  As my time as a college athlete draws to a close, and she moves on with other aspects in life, there are two things I have learned in the last four years with her as my coach: to never give up no matter how bad it looks, and that there is nothing that hard work and determination and passion all together cannot overcome and conquer.  I've had the opportunity to enhance my abilities while being surrounded by an incredible team, and gotten to experience such wonderful, fun things while being a college athlete.  It was all due to Rachel sharing her knowledge and passion for the game of golf as well as helping us find our own ways of bettering ourselves and being an example to all of us.

It's been a great four years coach, I wouldn't have missed this crazy and amazing journey for anything.

Package Assignment

I filmed the relay race for my D-Week activity on my iPhone and did all of the editing with iMovie.  I leaned a lot with this assignment and it was fun to play with and edit.

Illustration

For my illustration I wanted to involve the concept of good nutrition and healthy eating.  I think that a healthy, well balanced diet is important for utilizing and enjoying our bodies to their fullest capacity.  As an athlete I have experienced just how important a good variety of nutritious food really is; our bodies are living, breathing machines that need to be fueled with good healthy food.  In our society the focus has gone towards what is more convenient, what is most time efficient and what is the best deal for the most food.  We are not as worried about what types of things are going into our bodies as much as we are about how fast or cheap or easy it is to get them.  I love a burger as much as most people do, but I am also drawn to the farm to table mentality of putting time and effort into investing in good, whole, nutritious foods that are healthy and tasty and fresh.  I enjoy eating out with others and not having to worry about preparing food and cleaning up after the fact, but not all the time.  I love cooking with fresh meats, vegetables and fruits that I myself can season and prepare as I prefer; it does take more time and effort but I think that my body and health as well as the health of those I love to cook for is completely worth the investment.

Hard News - DSU Womens Golf at the BYU-Entrada Tournament

Unfortunately I was only able to take a few pictures of the last few holes on the second day due to having to class and other obligations, but I loved being out there and taking pictures of my team in the gorgeous setting of Entrada.  I was also walking so I was only able to follow two groups, my sister's and my team mate Maddy's groups were the only ones I was able to get pictures of during the second day.  I was able to walk around with my parents and fiance as spectators so I threw in a behind the scenes spectator picture just for fun.  Since we weren't able to get very close I had to rely on my zoom which really impressed me with its results for as far away as I was for a few shots.  I loved the contrast between colors and how vibrant they looked in the images, it's very rare when I get to be behind the camera and watching everything happening instead of being the one playing, it definitely gave me a new and different perspective.

Portrait Redux

I went with a casual setting for my Rembrandt shots but definitely ended up with some dramatic results.  My fiance was patient enough with me to let me take pictures of him at the dining room table during a routine homework session.  The light is coming from a north facing window giving me some great shadows to work with; in editing some of these shots I darkened the exposure to increase the contrast since I was going for more dramatic shadowing and to take the focus away from some of the background and keep the main focal point on his face. I wanted darker exposure because it also accentuates Derek's features and in a way compliments his character of being quieter and more mysterious in his mannerisms, as well as physically striking to look at with his slightly darker skin and jet black hair.  There's a balance between depth and simplicity in the lighting which also compliments Derek; the simple things in life make him happy while he is in no way a simple person but rather a wealth of information and a deep thinker.  I like the way these turned out with minor fine tuning, I think the last one is one of my favorites.

With the glamor shots I had my future sister-in-law stand at the other end of the dining room but with the same light source; with the lighter backdrop and the different angle it gave the pictures a softer, lighter look which is also what I was going for with Taylor.  I also love black and white and it gives the picture quality an entirely different softness as well as clarity, it's very flattering with Taylor's features and is a good representation of her personality.  The understated overalls with the flower print shirts reflects her casual and comfortable vibe while still remaining classy and simple with the black and white exposure.  Without having the luxury of a studio and professional lighting I was really happy with the outcomes from these pictures.
